Frequently Asked Questions: 1. Where will I stay while I am at camp? All CA staff members will move to the camp the evening of July 7th at about 5:00 pm. Counselors can choose to come to camp that night or the following morning. But, starting July 8th all staff and volunteers are required to be at camp until it ends on July 15. Counselors are housed in either one of 5 cabins or a lodge with other counselors and in close proximity to their assigned athlete. Bathrooms facilities are located at a central shower house. 2. How much money will I need while I am in Alaska? Typically, we go out to a restaurant or some other fun activity on the evenings of July 8th & 9th so you can plan for about $15-20 for each night. The only other expenses while you are at camp are purchasing additional CA t-shirts or sweatshirts or picking up any items that you may have forgotten while packing. Staff members make a trip to town most evenings during camp and offer to pick up any needed supplies or items for volunteers as well. You may want to consider spending a little extra time in Alaska, because it is a great place to visit. Of course, all of those expenses would be your responsibility. 3. When looking for airline tickets, what city should I fly into? When searching for a flight to Alaska, please make sure your reservations are for flights into Anchorage. 4. Do you have any suggestions for where to search for reasonable airline tickets? If you are a college student, check with your college for possible support or group rates if there are several students traveling together. As a college student, you may also want to check out the following website for reduced rates at www.studentuniverse.com. Other helpful websites that we have used before are:
5. When do I need to be in Alaska? Volunteers are required to be at camp no later than 8:30 am on July 8th. If you are planning to ride to camp with the camp staff, you must be in Alaska no later than 3:00 pm on July 7th. 6. How do I get from the airport to camp? Camp Abilities is located in Wasilla, Alaska approximately 50 miles north of Anchorage. If you will need a ride to camp, you must be in Anchorage by 3:00pm on July 7th. If possible, the earlier you can arrive on that day, the better. We will be leaving the Alpine office no later than 4:00pm to drive to camp. 7. Are there any accomodations available before and after camp? Accomodations are not provided before or after camp. If you need help with lodging let us know and we will recommend places to stay. One option to keep in mind is after spending the week with other counselors and camp staff many local volunteers have offered their homes as places to stay and have helped with exploring Alaska. 8. If I decide to come to Alaska early or stay for a while after camp, what does Alaska have to offer? Alaska is an incredibly beautiful place to visit. Daylight hours are long and there are many places to see in this VERY large state. Summers are a busy time to visit Alaska, so the further you can plan ahead and make reservations, the better. Alaska highlights include salmon or halibut fishing, hiking on the many mountain trails and around glaciers, taking a wildlife/glacier cruise out of Seward or Whittier, visiting Denali National Park to see Mt. McKinley, camping, kayaking or rafting, taking a rail tour, or enjoying the many activities that the "city" of Anchorage has to offer. Alaska visitors guides are available at the following websites:
